Introduction

Dundalk Printers and Allied Trades Social Club was originally founded by employees of the printing industry in Dundalk back in the 1960’s and appears in credit union minutes as early as February 1967.

An Early Challenge

In 1967/68 the founding fathers of the Dundalk Printer’s Credit Union, later to become Cuchullain Credit Union, saw a business opportunity to expand the common bond of their credit union so that its future in the town and local area could be enhanced.

Common Bond & Name

These men registered a common bond based on membership of the Dundalk Printers & Allied Trades Social Club and it is this common bond that is recognized by the Registrar of Credit Unions and the Irish League of Credit Unions today.
They also re-named and re-registered the credit union as Cuchullain Credit Union Lim-ited, on 27th August 1974.

Dedicated Women

Over the years a small dedicated group of women, with little or no recognition from anyone maintained the Social Club link with the founders and kept intact the common bond for the credit union.
In that time this group, raised many thousands of euro and distributed it among local charitable and other local voluntary organizations.
The Board of Directors of Cuchullain Credit Union has invited the Social Club to become more integrated with the credit union and to take a more ac-tive role in supporting its operating principles through their work. For its part, the Board has promised to assist with resourcing the Social Club and with helping them attract new volunteers to help with this work.

The purpose or objectives of the Social Club are as follows:

To support local charitable organizations and other community groups in their work in the community in particular those voluntary organizations that share the credit union operating principles of service, social responsibility and education
To administer a credit union social fund, set up by the Board of Directors of Cuchullain Credit Union. The funding of this Social Fund will be approved annually by the membership of Cuchullain Credit Union at the Annual General meeting of the credit union
To support the credit union in its work, in particular with maintaining a member-centred organization where dignity and respect for each other is paramount
To co-operate with reasonable requests from the Board of Directors of Cuchullain Credit Union that are consistent with the above objectives
Such other objectives that are consistent with and supportive of the credit union operating principles
