Paul Thornton 3rd Level Bursaries:

A true friend, a dedicated loyal credit union man.

No time for dwelling on problems, never a hostage to old wars,

For Paul the ‘now’ was the moment of opportunity, the ‘now’ was always the right time,

“The ‘now’ is here, let’s work,” this was the man.

For the late Paul Thornton, the Credit Union Operating Principles which “are founded in the philosophy of co-operation and its central values of equality, equity and mutual self-help” and the credit union services that “are directed towards improving the economic and social well-being of all members, whose needs shall be a permanent and paramount consideration, rather than towards the maximizing of surpluses…..”these were for him the guiding principles that he lived out each day.

Paul not only knew and understood these  credit union operating principles….principles that can nurture our country at the present time…..Paul lived them and taught them to anyone who would listen..

Education, training, development of people and development of credit unions were the fields he ploughed throughout his life and today many in the credit union movement are reaping the harvest of his work.

Never a nine to five man, Paul burned the midnight oil in boardrooms and committee rooms around the country as the credit union movement evolved to become the only true credit co-operative in Ireland today.

The Board and members of Cuchullain Credit Union are proud to be associated with the Paul Thornton 3^Rd Level Credit Union Bursaries.

These two third level bursaries are valued at €1,500.00 each and will be awarded to two credit union members each year who are attending a full-time third level course. Further details and entry forms are available in the office.
